Hydro Power Development: Key Issues for River Ecology and Management

  • Rating12345

The rapid development of hydro power schemes across the UK is a major area of business development and energy generation. It does however raise many issues involving the way we manage and protect our rivers. Many of these issues are long standing and involve the conservation status of rivers, endangered species and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. How  these are to be resolved with the legitimate demands from new hydropower schemes is a major challenge. This meeting is designed to highlight and point to the resolution of a number of key themes, including to:

  • Cover the proposed scale and importance of hydro power developments
  • Understand the ecological importance of our rivers and their goods and services
  • Outline the contents of the Good Practice Guide and it’s future development
  • Explore the catchment scale implications of the hydropower
  • Understand the ecological requirements for fish passage and flows
  • Understand the fish screening requirements and design
  • Highlight the outstanding issues and next steps

A wide range of outstanding speakers including representatives of fishing, conservation and hydropower interests are speaking and 50% of the conference time has been allocated to points and questions from the audience.

The aim of this conference will be to focus on a number of ecological issues in the context the Hydropower Good Practice Guidelines in order to better understand key issues and what needs to be done to resolve these. The programme has been developed in close collaboration with the fishery and angling NGOs and the British Hydropower Association.
