Hallowell, Maine – Blue Marble Geographics (www.bluemarblegeo.com) is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Global Mapper version 19. With numerous functional improvements and performance enhancements throughout the application, the version 19 release is further evidence of Global Mapper’s growing reputation as a viable alternative to traditional GIS software. Highlights of this release include a powerful new attribute editor; a new tool for dynamically adjusting the light source position for hillshade rendering; and drag and drop docking functionality for improved multiview window management.
Blue Marble’s GIS software is used by hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers throughout the world who need affordable, user-friendly, yet powerful GIS solutions. Users come from a wide range of industries including software, oil and gas, mining, civil engineering, surveying, and technology companies, as well as government departments and academic institutions.
With the approach of the twentieth anniversary of the first commercial release of Global Mapper, it is worth considering how far this remarkable application has come. From its origins as a simple viewer for USGS data, the software now boasts an extensive array of vector and raster processing tools; powerful analysis functionality; and unmatched interoperability. In the last several years, the software’s capabilities have grown exponentially, with a particular emphasis on 3D visualization and analysis. The version 19 release continues this aggressive development path with countless upgrades and improvements throughout all areas of the application.
Replacing the simple search function is a new, more powerful tabular attribute querying and editing tool, with a spreadsheet-like display and real-time editing of feature attributes in a dockable window. Terrain visualization has been enhanced with an interactive tool for dynamically positioning the hillshading light source using real time click and drag control. When using the 3D View, an option has been added to limit the geographic extent of terrain data displayed based on the visible extent of the 2D map, which significantly improves the rendering speed.
Other enhancements include an expanded list of built-in online data sources, which now includes streaming services from individual U.S. states and Canadian provinces (when available). The process of docking windows has been streamlined with drag and drop positioning for all dockable windows, including the 3D Viewer, Path Profile and Attribute Editor. Raster calculation now offers several new built-in functions including Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) and Advanced Vegetation Index (AVI).
“The culmination of months of development work, the annual major version release of Global Mapper is one of the most important events in our calendar,” stated Blue Marble’s President, Patrick Cunningham. “We are particularly excited about the version 19 release, especially the powerful new attribute editor and the interactive hillshade tool.”
