Gen-3: Advancing BlackSky’s vision for the first of Its kind space-based Intelligence system

  • Rating12345

In less than two years from the completion of our Gen-2 constellation, BlackSky is yet again setting new industry standards for speed and agility as we prepare for the Q4 2024 launch of the company’s first very-high resolution Gen-3 satellite.

“You can feel the energy of anticipation across the entire BlackSky team,” said CEO Brian O’Toole. “The first Gen-3 satellite is in the final stages of assembly, integration and test and the team has already begun mission dress rehearsals. It’s not just a pivotal moment for the company. When you step back and see the big picture, Gen-3 represents a massive, innovative leap forward for the entire space-based intelligence industry.”

A BlackSky Gen-3 satellite is assembled at LeoStella, which will close the gap between spatial and temporal resolution and enable timely insights.

As the Earth Observation (EO) world pivots from static mapping to dynamic monitoring, BlackSky has reshaped expectations of what’s possible with high-resolution satellite imagery and automated analytics. With Gen-3 capabilities, BlackSky gives customers the ability to revisit an area of critical interest up to 15 times per day and to task and receive that data into their personal workspaces at mission-relevant speed.

Add the ability to automatically fuse in other space-based and terrestrial data sources through the BlackSky Spectra® platform while simultaneously monitoring several locations at massive geographic scale and you have the makings of the most advanced real-time space-based intelligence system in the world.

And this just describes BlackSky’s current Gen-2 constellation.

“When combined with our Spectra platform, our Gen-3 constellation will provide our customers with transformative space-based intelligence that will deliver a next level of performance with low-latency AI-enabled analytics for a first to act advantage,” said O’Toole.

Gen-3 will close the gap between spatial and temporal resolution. When it comes to resolution, revisit rates and delivery times Gen-3 will deliver three times more performance than Gen-2 and enable timely insights that are not achievable using traditional mapping approaches. In addition to the automatic detection, identification and classification of a wider library of vehicles, aircraft, vessels and other objects of tactical interest, the Gen-3 constellation will introduce a new capability for BlackSky customers: the ability to image through smoke and haze with Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) bands. The evolution of BlackSky’s constellation continues to optimize for additional capacity and flexibility. The introduction of low-latency intersatellite communications will give customers more flexibility for high-priority, last-minute tasking missions while highly agile onboard attitude control systems will enable maximum operational efficiency.

Our Gen-3 satellite will be produced by LeoStella, our satellite development manufacturing joint venture. Their state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities were built from the ground up to support agile and rapid small satellite production. LeoStella has an exceptional track record of producing highly reliable, high-performing small satellites as evidenced by the deployment of our Gen-2 constellation over the past several years.

The Gen-2 constellation continues to perform well and has met or exceeded all of BlackSky’s performance and expected mission life objectives. This level of performance and on-orbit heritage has been incorporated into our Gen-3 design and satellite production line.

In addition to the production of our first Gen-3 satellites, LeoStella has been ramping up supply chain and production operations to support a sustained rate of production of these satellites to meet our constellation growth objectives.

LeoStella gives BlackSky a competitive advantage through vertical integration, enabling us to bring responsive solutions to market at disruptive speed and economics.

“We have built a diverse global customer base that includes some of the most demanding U.S. and international military and government organizations who trust BlackSky to support their most critical operational needs on a daily basis,” said O’Toole.

Their continued confidence is built on years of reliable subscription-based access to BlackSky’s services and Gen-3 will only increase our customers’ ability to successfully execute real-time tactical ISR and other missions.
