Esri UK announced that it is working with the Geographical Association (GA) to help stimulate a nationwide debate about the core geography knowledge that children should be taught at school. “Geography skills are becoming increasingly important for employers, yet many young people have a very limited understanding of the world in which they live,” says Richard Waite, managing director of Esri UK.
“Esri UK is committed to helping young people gain a better knowledge of geography and practical skills that they can employ in the work place. By working with the GA, we aim to support the development of a strong geography curriculum that is relevant to pupils’ future lives.”
Esri UK has used Esri’s ArcGIS Explorer Online software to create an interactive presentation that covers many different geography topics, from the countries of Great Britain to the major rivers of the world. Users of the presentation can zoom in and out of maps and click on locations to reveal added information, such as the populations of capital cities and the heights of volcanoes. This presentation is being made available to teachers and other members of the GA as part of a public consultation about the UK’s geography curriculum.
“Esri UK’s interactive presentation will encourage thought and provoke debate about what young people should be taught at school,” says David Lambert, chief executive of the GA. “Powered by GIS, the presentation is very easy to use and will play a key role in our consultation process about the UK geography curriculum.”
