DigitalGlobe Top Satellite Image 2012 – Winner Announced

Today, DigitalGlobe announced the winner of the Top Satellite Image of 2012 contest. After a close race with the media-favored image of Mt. Fuji, Japan, the Burning Man Festival image had a late surge in the second round and clinched the win.

The image of the Burning Man Festival received the most votes on DigitalGlobe’s Facebook page among the top five finalist images listed below:

·         Volcanic Chain – Andes Mountains, Chile

·         Burning Man Festival in Nevada

·         Space Shuttle Endeavour atop a 747 – New Mexico, USA

·         Mine Sculpture in North England

·         Mt. Fuji, Japan

The image of the Burning Man Festival in Nevada was taken by DigitalGlobe’s WorldView-2 satellite on August 28, 2012. Operating at an altitude of 770 kilometers, WorldView-2 is the first high-resolution 8-band multispectral commercial satellite. Additional information is available on DigitalGlobe’s blog post.
