The Association for Geographic Information’s (AGI) conference, the flagship industry event for over 10 years, is being held on 28 – 30 September 2010 under the theme of ‘Opportunities in a Changing World’. Ordnance Survey, as the national mapping agency and a platinum sponsor of the event, will be highlighting examples of how its location data has enabled innovation and delivered efficiencies to both the private and public sector. Hundreds of delegates are expected to flock to the venue in Stratford-upon-Avon this year. Among them are a whole range of GI practitioners, academics and policymakers, attracted thanks to a world‑class conference programme and showcase exhibition. Ordnance Survey will be supporting the conference Solutions Centre with a hands‑on session, introducing attendees to the tools being built by the UK Location Programme to enable data providers to be INSPIRE compliant. The INSPIRE Directive establishes a framework for easier sharing of geographical information among European public bodies and improved accessibility to the public. Ordnance Survey’s Director General and Chief Executive, Vanessa Lawrence CB, will be kicking off the second day with her keynote speech. Vanessa will be addressing attendees on how GI is being used across the world to drive change and efficiencies. Vanessa will also update delegates on developments within Ordnance Survey, including OS OpenData and the new Public Sector Mapping Agreement. Vanessa comments, “The industry is going through an exciting time with more and more people understanding that geography has a vital role to play in addressing some of the grand challenges that the world faces. “Events like AGI 2010 are putting the spotlight on the connecting power of location and its value across a huge range of applications.” Ordnance Survey’s Director of Products, Peter ter Haar, will be running a session on how the opening up of GI has enabled developers and other user communities to innovate.
