American Sentinel University Profiles Next Gen Technology for Online Learning at 2013 Sloan-C International Conference

American Sentinel University’s faculty, executive staff and board members will be presenting seven informative sessions, including an innovative 3D virtual learning nursing simulation focused on the key aspects of next generation technology in online learning at the 19th Annual Sloan Consortium, International Conference on Online Learning held in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Nov. 20-22, 2013.

“Online learning is one of the most talked about and fastest growing sectors in higher education and corporate training today. The Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning is the premier global gathering in our field and we are honored to share key aspects about next generation technology for online learning with our peers,” says John R. Bourne, chief academic officer at American Sentinel University.

American Sentinel’s sessions will delve into STEM, health care informatics, virtual simulations, competency-based learning, corporate training and best outcomes for branch campuses. These important topics help strengthen and enhance online learning in higher education and corporate training. The list of sessions includes:

Frank Mayadas, advisor to the Sloan Foundation and board member and chair of the academic advisory committee at American Sentinel University, together with Dr. Bourne will participate in a workshop focusing on assisting educators in strengthening and enhancing their STEM online course offerings to motivate those interested in creating new courses and programs.

-ALN in Corporate America: Focus on Collaboration
Nov. 20, 2013 – 12:45 p.m. in Southern Hemisphere 2
Dr. Mayadas’ two-part session details several successful implementations of university online programs offered to company personnel and Sloan-C’s newly introduced Corporate Special Interest Group (SIG).

Dr. Mayadas and an experienced panel of education executives will provide in-depth information important to decisions relating to branch campuses assuring best outcomes for their states.

-Bringing Real-World Experience to the Remote Student: Laboratories and Virtual Worlds

Dr. Mayadas and Dr. Bourne of American Sentinel University will update attendees about the current state of affairs in technology and practices that allow “real-world” experiences to the remote learner.

-Obesity Awareness through Virtual Simulations
Nov. 21, 2013 – 2:35 p.m. in Northern Hemisphere A-D
Margaret Czart, assistant professor, health care informatics at American Sentinel University and recent recipient of the Sloan-C Online Teaching Certificate – Specialization in Online Management, will demonstrate the use of virtual simulations to educate the students about awareness, promote health and determine the causes.

-Badging System to Document Competency-Based Learning in Online Geospatial Learning Lab

Stephen A. McElroy, GISP, GIS program chair at American Sentinel University will provide an overview about American Sentinel’s new badging system to document competency-based learning in the online geospatial learning lab.

-Challenges of Course Development for an Interdisciplinary Program in Health Care Informatics

Dr. Czart will demonstrate the challenges of course development for a pilot health care informatics program.

American Sentinel University at 19th Annual Sloan Consortium, International Conference on Online Learning
American Sentinel University’s information management and technology faculty will be exhibiting next generation virtual nursing technology – ‘Windshield Survey in a 3D World’ at the Booth 5 in the Northern Hemisphere Foyer (next to Sloan-C in Booth 4) during exhibit hall hours Nov. 20-22.

Trevor D. Rasmusson, MSM, application instructional designer at American Sentinel University will be demonstrating an innovative 3D virtual nursing simulation, the Windshield Survey, which allows undergraduate and graduate nursing students to participate in a simulated community health practice experience. It is designed to provide students with an authentic community health practice learning experience.
