American Sentinel University Appoints Geospatial Technology Educator Dr. Stephen McElroy

American Sentinel University, a leading online university accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), a recognized member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, today announced that Dr. Stephen McElroy has joined the university as geographic information systems (GIS) program chair effective June 18, 2012.

In his new position, Dr. McElroy will be working with the American Sentinel information technology academic team to enhance the university’s geospatial technology programs and integrate geospatial learning materials throughout American Sentinel’s curriculum.

Previously, Dr. McElroy was the assistant director of the cartography and geospatial technologies department for Statistical Research, Inc. in Tucson, Arizona.

Dr. McElroy holds a bachelor’s degree in international affairs from the University of Cincinnati, a master’s degree in Latin American studies from the University of Arizona and a doctorate in geography from the joint program at San Diego State University and the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also holds a geographic information systems professional certification from the GIS Certification Institute and an educational teaching certificate from the State of Arizona.

Academic studies and employment have taken Dr. McElroy to field assignments in South America, Central America and Europe. His work experience includes analytical research projects for various governmental agencies and civilian companies, as well as program development and faculty assignments for various schools throughout the southwestern U.S.

Dr. McElroy is a published writer and his research has focused on geographic and geospatial technology topics.
