Detecting and measuring ground movements from space: e-GEOS leading the European project

  • Rating12345

Rome – e-GEOS won the contract to lead the international consortium “ORIGINAL” (OpeRatIonal Ground motion INsar Alliance), awarded by the European Environment Agency (EEA) for the 2024-2028 end-to-end implementation and operation of the European Ground Motion Service (EGMS), ensuring the continuous supply of reliable, high quality data.

The European Ground Motion Service (EGMS) is a framework agreement of the European Environment Agency (EEA), established under Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS) to detect and measure ground movements across Europe with milimetre precision.

e-GEOS (Telespazio 80%, ASI 20%) will provide the service, based on radar (InSAR) data derived from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite constellation, also using Leonardo’s HPC High Performance Computing Davinci-1 which allows the monitoring of the structural integrity of dams, bridges, railways and buildings, enabling urban planners to make data-driven decisions about infrastructure developments and providing useful information for the study of climate change impacts in urban areas.

Leveraging insights from experience under the 2020-2024 EGMS contract, the consortium aims to maintain and exceed the previously established high standards by implementing advancements that not only overcome past challenges but also meet future requirements.

ORIGINAL is composed by leading experts in InSAR and geospatial monitoring from – together with e-GEOS – NORCE, Geological Survey of Norway, TRE Altamira, and GAF, with support from DLR, PPO.labs and LTK SGO. The consortium has a solid and proven experience in the production of ground motion services and on the detection and measurement of infrastructures stability.
