Carbon Capture and Storage Technologies to Create Global Breakthrough Solutions

  • Rating12345

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is considered to be one of the main technologies for reducing CO2 emissions. In CCS, the carbon dioxide from the thermal conversion of coal is separated from a CO2 containing gas stream and isolated permanently from the atmosphere to a suitable storage location. Although CCS is still in early demonstration phase, intensive and focused research has remarkable opportunities for global breakthrough solutions.

The CCSP program is one example of the platforms created by CLEEN Ltd. and it gives a great opportunity to export Finnish know-how worldwide.

“We are able to utilize CCSP program as a platform in Finland for inventing remarkable global breakthroughs in an area which has important meaning globally”, explains Antti Arasto from VTT, Program Manager for the Carbon Capture and Storage program.

The importance of the program in Finland is also emphasized by the positive funding decision by Tekes.

The CCSP program has three major goals. If (zero emission) significant (80-90%) global greenhouse gas emission reductions are pursued, CCS plays an important role in reducing CO2 emissions from coal based energy production. In addition, CCS provides opportunities for various industries, which have no CO2 neutral alternatives for fossil resources. Furthermore, capture of CO2 from biogenic sources creates CO2 sinks, and this creates globally remarkable opportunities for countries with significant biomass sources and bioenergy production.
