Satellite Image: Russian Ships in Azov Sea Ice Trap

Dozens of ships are waiting on ice escort at the entrance to the Kerch Strait and at the Azov Sea. ScanEx RDC in behalf of the EMERECOM of Russia carries out a combination of optical and radar imagery used to both analyze the ice situation and to detect ships. For ships identification signals from the automatic identification system (AIS) sensors are used. A complex application of satellite-based information and additional data enables to detect all ships, including the ones in distress, as well as ships with no crew onboard (evacuated).
Operational satellite monitoring of ice and shipping situation in Azov Sea has been conducted by ScanEx RDC since late January. The RADARSAT-1 radar images acquired on February 2, 6 and 9 and RADARSAT-2 image from February 4, 7 and 12, as well as ENVISAT images from February 2 and 10 detected a lot of ships that were in the south-western part of the Azov Sea with the most complicated ice situation.  Read More
