URISA’s Vanguard Cabinet Sponsors K-12, University and Young Professional Competitions at GIS-Pro & CalGIS 2018

  • Rating12345

In addition to meet-ups and networking events during GIS-Pro & CalGIS 2018 in Palm Springs, California in October , URISA’s Vanguard Cabinet of Young Professionals has teamed up with leaders in the education community to organize a valuable program track titled “Inspiring the Future of GIS“. Further, the VC is sponsoring a K-12 poster competition and University student and Young Professional lightning talk competitions.

K-12 Poster Competition
Last year’s inaugural K-12 poster competition was a resounding success in Jacksonville. This year’s competition promises to be bigger and better.

Projects will be judged on:

  • Creative use of desktop, web, and/or mobile GIS applications
  • Application of spatial thinking and/or analysis to answer geographic questions or address spatial problems
  • Quality of cartographic design
  • Overall aesthetic of poster design

University Competition – Lightning Talks
Are you currently enrolled in college or a recent graduate? Consider participating in the University Competition, this year an ignite-style format aka lightning talk, limited to five minutes (20 slides auto-advanced at 15 seconds each).

Judging criteria:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in applying spatial thinking and geospatial techniques
  • Panel discussion describing project design, analysis and implementation
  • Overall presentation quality

Young Professional Competition – Lightning Talks
If you weren’t already accepted for a presentation at GIS-Pro & CalGIS 2018 and are a young professional (35 years of age or younger), consider sharing your project success story via an ignite-style format aka lightning talk, limited to five minutes (20 slides auto-advanced at 15 seconds each).

Judging criteria:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in spatial analytics and cartographic design and how their presentation uses Geospatial Science to help better the world.
  • Overall presentation quality
