Ramboll received the Special Achievement Award (SAG) from Esri, the global American company responsible for the GIS system, for Ramboll’s success in developing and promoting the application of GIS (geographic information system) throughout its business. This is only the seventh time that a Danish company has received the award.
”We have implemented the Esri GIS platform globally across the 35 countries in our organisation, so all our employees now have access to the GIS platform. Esri’s award is a fantastic recognition of our efforts to standardise the way we work with GIS throughout our entire organisation and together with our clients. Today more than 1000 employees in Ramboll use the same Esri GIS platform,” says Bo Grave, Director of Digital Innovation in Ramboll in Denmark.
Søren Ellegaard, CEO of Geoinfo A/S, the Danish distributor of Esri software, is very pleased that Ramboll in particular received the award this year.

One map says more than 1000 words
GIS is used for analysis and visualisation of geographic information. With GIS, you can get an effective overview of data such as infrastructure, building, water, soil conditions, vegetation and much more. Linking all this data to a digital map makes it possible to detect geographic correlations in the data, and this can make previously unknown patterns more clear and promote knowledge-sharing.
For example, Ramboll uses GIS to map the groundwater in California and to help Californian authorities get a better overview of the drought-stricken state’s groundwater resources, and thus to improve utilisation of fresh groundwater in the drinking water supply.
Ramboll has also used GIS to map the areas in Copenhagen with the greatest risk of flooding, in connection with work on Copenhagen’s cloudburst plan, and Ramboll is actively involved in a similar project in New York City.
In cooperation with the Danish Energy Agency (Energistyrelsen), Ramboll conducted a survey of practices for handling project proposals for collective heat supply in municipalities. A questionnaire supplemented with data from public information registers (OIS – Offentlige Information Server) was visualised in the Esri-based, WebGIS solution. In Ramboll Energy, the ArcGIS Online is an integrated part of the solutions that provide operations and maintenance for district heating. GIS offers an overview and value creation of district heating plant assets.
”Using ArcGIS Online, we have an open platform where we can share information with clients and citizens about our projects. We see great opportunities to develop the platform even further and to have a fully integrated environment where our people in the field, in our offices, as well as our clients in whole different locations can share geographic information here and now,“ says Bo Grave.
Esri’s Special Achievement Award was presented to Ramboll in San Diego on 12 July 2017, at Esri’s annual User Conference with 16,000 participants.
