MapJam Launches Developer API with Open Source Maps Targeting Google Maps and Mapbox Customers with Reduced, Simpler Pricing and Terms

  • Rating12345

San Francisco — MapJam, Inc. announced the release of MapJam for Developers with free access to the simplest and most accessible developer tools for building mapping applications. MapJam now offers robust, vector map tiles based on OpenStreetMap data that work seamlessly with open source projects including Leaflet, Mapzen, and D3, as well as libraries that highlight creative functions from Font Awesome and kolor.js.

MapJam offers pricing that is simple and works for any organization: there are no tiered plans, confusing credit schemes, MAU limits, or annual commitments. Developers can use MapJam maps with free, commercial, private, behind paywall, or asset tracking applications without limitations.

MapJam offers anyone 100,000 map views for free every month, with additional map views costing $0.15 per thousand views, which is less than one-third the cost of traditional commercial maps.

Driven by the high prices and often confusing and unrealistic terms from Google Maps and Mapbox, especially for customers starting to exceed free tiers and for enterprises developing private applications, the founders were convinced that streamlining and simplification of pricing and terms were greatly needed in the marketplace.

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve offered a world class consumer facing mapping tool at MapJam.com which was successfully integrated with platforms such as Weebly and Eventbrite. Along the way we’ve spoken with many large web sites and enterprise customers and learned of the onerous financial burdens and terms imposed by other mapping providers. We responded by embracing open source mapping and decided to shake up the market’s pricing models.” said Jack Gonzalez, a former geography teacher who is co-founder of MapJam.

“Simple, scalable pricing and simple development tools are the keys,” added MapJam co-Founder Scollay Petry. ”Sendgrid did this for email, Twilio for SMS, and Amazon for Push notifications. We have achieved the ultimate in simplicity for mapping tiles, with zero limitations.”
