Harris Corporation to Provide Airborne Radars to NOAA

  • Rating12345

MELBOURNE, Fla., Nov. 20, 2015 — Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) via its subsidiary EDO Corporation will provide AN/APY-11 airborne multi-mode radars to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to enhance severe weather tracking and other environmental monitoring capabilities.

Harris and partner ELTA Systems Ltd. will provide a radar system for each of NOAA’s two WP-3D Orion aircraft. The technology will expand NOAA’s current hurricane surveillance capabilities to include iceberg monitoring, marine mammal detection, oil spill and debris tracking, as well as oceanic current monitoring. The AN/APY-11 multimode radar systems will also enhance NOAA’s ability to support environmental stewardship through the National Marine Sanctuary Program.

“NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters have an impressive legacy of storm tracking which has greatly furthered our understanding of severe weather,” said Rich Sorelle, president, Harris Electronic Warfare business. “Harris is firmly committed to working with NOAA to expand this mission, and our airborne surveillance radars will help make this possible.”

Harris AN/APY-11 radars, assembled by EDO Corporation in Amityville, New York, have supported the U.S. Coast Guard’s Long Range Surveillance HC-130J aircraft since 2005, helping intercept drug smugglers, locate stranded boats and track ice in the North Atlantic. Harris expects to deliver NOAA’s radars in June 2017.
