  • Rating12345

SAN JOSE, CA, November 18, 2015 — A standing room only crowd listened intently to a dynamic panel of government leaders and industry executives on the challenges, implementations, timelines and industry involvement around UAS technology at the opening day of the inaugural Drone World Expo. Following the keynote, the show floor opened where 75 exhibiting companies showcased the newest technology and services for end users and drone professionals.

Panelists on the UTM Update panel included (left to right) moderator Gretchen West, Senior Advisory of Innovation and Technology, Hogan Lovells; Mark “Hoot” Gibson, Senior Advisory on UAS Integration, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); David Famolari, Director, Verizon Ventures; Parimal “PK” Kopardekar, Manager, Safe Autonomous System Operations (SASO) Project, NASA; and Dave Vos, Project Wing Project Lead, Google X.

Marke “Hoot” Gibson, Senior Advisor of UAS Integration, Federal Aviation Administration, said, “We have begun to embrace the greatest revolution in aviation in our lifetime which is changing the way we at the FAA think and collaborate with industry.”

In addition to the keynote and a full day of conference sessions, Brendan Schulman, DJI’s director of Policy announced that DJI will begin offering a new “geofencing” safety system that the company says will better keep drones out of restricted areas. “By default, starting in December, users of DJI-brand drones will not be able to enter into, or take off from, areas like prisons or power plants. The company says the system – called Geospatial Environment Online, and powered by a company called AirMap – will also be constantly updated with new information on restrictions, which will prevent drones from entering zones with shifting security needs, like stadium events or wildfire areas,” Schulman stated.

Drone World Expo continues today at the San Jose Convention Center, with another dynamic day of education sessions, exhibits, demonstrations and networking. The event kicks off at 9 am with a keynote presentation by John L. Petersen, Chairman, The Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation, who will present “Drones for Good: Using UAS to Stop the Slaughter of Rhino and Elephants in Africa.” The trade show floor will be open from 10 am to 5 pm and there will be live flying demonstrations, and presentations in the Tech Talk Theater.
