Two ISDE Council Members Receive Prestigious Awards

September 9, 2015 — Professor GUO Huadong and Professor Markku Kulmala, Council members of the ISDE, have been awarded by the Russian Geographical Society (RGS), for their contributions of the scientific and academic achievements in the geographic community, on 19 August, 2015.  

GUO Huadong from the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth of the Chinese Academy of Sciences received the Nikolai Przewalski Gold Medal, an award named after a world-famous explorer and naturalist, in recognition to his efforts to remote sensing methods, Digital Earth prototype system and development of Digital Earth in the context of global change. Markku Kulmala, from the University of Helsinki, was awarded the Fedor P. Litke Gold Medal for being the world’s most cited researcher in geosciences and his work in atmospheric sciences, meteorology and climatology.  

These awards were given by personally presented to our two Council members by Sergey Kuzhugetovich Shoygu, the President of the RGS in a solemn banquet in honor of the 170th Anniversary of Russian Geographical Society in Moscow.

As one of the oldest geographical societies in the world, RGS was established in Saint Petersburg on August 6, 1845. And these prizes are aimed to honor the scientists who have made outstanding achievements in geographic sciences.
