March 12, 2015 — Several speakers will visit UC Merced this week to discuss Geographic Information Systems technology, which can be used for such diverse tasks as determining the most efficient bus routes and tracking disease patterns.

The fifth annual GeoSummit, “Shaping the Growth of GIS Innovation,” will be held 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday in the California Room at the UC Merced campus. The event is open to the public at no charge.

The GeoSummit will feature speakers from all walks of GIS to share their work and research using the latest in GIS technology to understand and address local, regional and statewide concerns, according to a news release.

The keynote speaker is Bill Hodge, the GIS manager for the city of Midland, Texas, and the executive director of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association GIS Certification Institute. Other speakers will talk about GIS and wildlife, low-income housing and riparian floodplains habitat restoration.

GIS is the field where people analyze geographic data and produce specialized maps, charts and other reports to interpret and understand the information.

The event is free, but there is a $6 fee for on-campus parking. Advanced registration is required. Go to communityresearch.ucmerced.edu.
