The Space Monitoring System of the Russian EMERCOM started to handle the national “Canopus-V” RS satellite data in direction reception mode. The basis of the system on the ground are the small-size universal UniScan stations developed and produced by ScanEx RDC. The stations are installed in Moscow, Vologda, Krasnoyarsk and Vladivostok and enable to get satellite images from different spacecrafts with high frequency for monitoring, forecasting and emergency response actions.
Operational control of the departmental Space Monitoring System is executed by the National Center for Crisis Management.
The EMERCOM Space Monitoring System enables to receive satellite images of different resolution in direct reception mode from seven spacecrafts, equipped with optical and radar Earth observation sensors at resolutions from 0.7 to 250 m. This system is now capable of operating with the data from the Russian “Canopus-V” satellites in direct reception mode.
Currently the EMERCOM Space Monitoring System operates with the “Canopus-V” data in test mode. Full functional operation is expected to be in compliance with the program for EMERCOM Space Monitoring System development.
— The hardware of the UniScan station is universal and programmable, which allows getting information from Earth observation satellites in a wide range of formats. Therefore, in a short period of time the entire Space Monitoring System was able to start handling “Canopus-V” data, – notes ScanEx’s General Director Vladimir Gershenzon.
— Both newly acquired and archived satellite images are used for emergency situation monitoring and response. “Canopus-V” data application will even more extend our possibilities in monitoring human-induced and natural emergencies, disastrous hydrometeorological events, and in detection of forest fires, – says Alexander Yepikhin, EMERCOM Space Monitoring Department Head.
“Canopus-V” satellite, launched in July 2012 operates on the circular sun-synchronous orbit of 510±10 km and with inclination of 97,4 deg. The weight of the satellite is 473 kg, the payload mass is 106 kg. The imaging complement includes the panchromatic and multispectral imaging systems.
