Satellite Images for Forestry to be PResented at the Earth from Space Conference

  • Rating12345

Participants of the  6th International Conference “Earth from Space — the Most Effective Solutions” to discuss the issues of satellite-based monitoring of forest loggings, to share experience in using satellite imagery data for forestry solutions.

Current results of the Global Forest Watch 2.0 project will be presented during the conference. It is a system of operational satellite-based monitoring of fires, combining the possibilities of satellite imagery, technologies of exchanging data and uniting the users throughout the world for deforestation prevention.

During the conference ScanEx Research & Development Center will present its experience and results of the work of the open web-service for natural fires monitoring “Kosmosnimki – Fires” (http://fires.kosmosnimki.ru/). This service provides operational data and statistics on fire situation in the country. The global map of fires, integrated into the “Kosmosnimki – Fires” service functionality, is one of the latest developments of the company specialists. The space monitoring data is especially valuable for detection of natural fire sites at their early stages, as it is much easier and quicker to put out a small fire, then to fight the already expanded forest or grassland fire instead.

A separate thematic section, dedicated to the satellite data application for forest management control and forest felling monitoring, will be held within the frames of the 6th International Conference  “Earth from Space — the Most Effective Solutions”.

A master-class, during which the ScanEx expert Dmitry Dobrynin will present the results of the application of the forest stand properties characteristics analysis method as per the features of individual tops in closed forest covers, will also take place at the conference. This method was developed at ScanEx RDC.

High resolution satellite images are applied for the forestry solutions. The pattern of interpretation features on high resolution images, where the principal role is played by the texture and topological features (i.e. features of relative position of objects), enables to resolve the following tasks:

  • assessment of morphological properties of separate tree tops with extrapolation of these indices to forest properties;
  • verification of the territory of the forest fund dynamics at the individual tree tops level;
  • verification of the damage during degradation of forest vegetation;
  • detection of spatial position of the degradation factors and of their dynamics;
  • degradation process progression forecasting;
  • Generating the model of stem volume growth and tree crops development natural dynamics.

The 6th International Conference “Earth from Space – the Most Effective Solutions” will take place on October 1-3, 2013 at the Moscow Region “Vatutinki” resort hotel.  Key topics of the conference are: nature protection and access to space images and near real-time satellite-based monitoring services from civil society in Russia and abroad. Conference organizers are: ScanEx Research & Development Center, NGO Transparent World. Conference participation requests can be placed by filling in the registration form at the website: conference.scanex.ru.
