Alberta Minister Seeks Better Environmental Monitoring

Alberta’s environment minister defended the Canadian province’s environmental record, but said air- and water-quality monitoring related to oil-sands production hasn’t been coordinated and needs to be improved. Rob Renner, in an interview, said the province’s environmental record, including its air and water monitoring, has been unfairly portrayed by critics as inadequate. He said the province has done a good job of collecting data, but conceded it hadn’t done enough to coordinate its efforts and share information among Alberta’s several agencies responsible for environmental issues.
