NAVTEQ Adds Esri File Geodatabase to its Suite of Data Formats

  • Rating12345

NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world, is announcing at the 2011 Esri International User Conference that the NAVTEQ map is now available in Esri’s File Geodatabase format. A Geodatabase is the native spatial data storage and management framework for Esri’s ArcGIS software and supports spatial data stored in a DBMS or file folders.

NAVTEQ will offer File Geodatabase as a new standard format for the NAVTEQ map and provide full technical support. This format supports critical mapping functionality such as map display, geocoding/destination selection, positioning, tracking and optimized routing. The format includes all geographic coverage for the NAVTEQ map, featuring precise geometry and exceptional detail of the real world. NAVTEQ geographic analysts collect up to 260 attributes—including street names, address ranges, access limitations, time and turn restrictions, actual sign text and speed information.

Esri software users can now get the NAVTEQ map in one folder of files whether it be a continent-level, country-level or even state level (USA only) clip of map data, eliminating the need for multiple downloads. The NAVTEQ map, plus additional premium content, can be accessed through a single download, improving versatility and usability. With File Geodatabase, users will also have direct usage of the NAVTEQ map in ArcGIS Network Analyst (no conversions required), and direct usage of the mapping layers within an ArcGIS map document for easy visualization. The entire dataset fully adheres to the Unicode standard.

“In the past, users had to convert NAVTEQ data into the Esri data model to make use of all its capabilities for routing,” said Matt Crowder, Development Lead for ArcGIS Network Analyst, Esri.  “With this new data product it’s simple for Esri users to immediately create and use transportation networks for performing sophisticated network analysis through ArcGIS Network Analyst.”

“NAVTEQ and Esri collaborated extensively and had a vision to help users save time and resources through the ‘plug-and-play’ experience offered by the Esri File Geodatabase,” said Roy Kolstad, vice president, Enterprise Americas, NAVTEQ.  “NAVTEQ is dedicated to providing the GIS community with an authoritative map that provides flexible data formats designed for efficient implementation.”
