Biodiversity Indicators: Flanders

  • Rating12345

The Biodiversity Indicators website summarizes facts and figures about nature and nature policy in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium. They are structured along the ‘EU Headline Indicators’. The EU Environment Council adopted this set of 15 indicators in June 2004 to monitor progress toward the 2010 biodiversity target. In 2001 the EU Council of Göteborg adopted the policy goal “to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2010”, as part of the EU Strategy for Sustainable Development. With this set of indicators the EU also wants to streamline its reporting for the Convention on Biodiversity. The set of 15 EU headline indicators is therefore based on the indicator framework adopted by CBD’s 7th Conference of Parties in February 2004.

Several of these indicators are still under development (SEBI 2010). Biodiversity Indicators lists 33 Flemish indicators that correspond to one of these 15 EU Headline Indicators, or to an aspect thereof.

The Dutch version of this website, ‘Natuurindicatoren’, contains a larger number of indicators, including those that are used in the Flemish biennial Nature Report and in the Environmental Policy Plan.
