Getmapping Hosts Maps for Aberystwyth University

  • Rating12345
Getmapping is providing a high performance WMS map data feed to the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences (IGES) at Aberystwyth University. The data includes OS Mapping, Getmapping high resolution aerial photography, colour infrared imagery, and elevation data. This comprehensive suite of data delivered via the Internet from Getmapping’s Data Centre is being used by undergraduates on a daily basis.

The data can be accessed via professional GIS software but also through Getmapping’s own web based GIS application which can also pull data from IGES’ extensive Digital Map Library. As well as the supporting students the library recently played host to Welsh abstract artist Mary Lloyd-Jones who is using Getmapping imagery of forestry, lead mining and Cardiff Airport to provide inspiration for new work involving schools which will feature in a S4/C Welsh Television documentary to be screened in March 2012.

“This is a fantastic resource for our undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as academics who can use these data in combination with other GIS, remote sensing and field survey data held in our recently established Digital Map Library” said Professor Richard Lucas from IGES. “The data are simple to access through the GIS software packages, which the students are using on a daily basis and, of course, the great thing is we do not have to manage it in any way. An additional bonus is the ability to access the data remotely using Getmapping’s own web based GIS application which means students are not restricted to working within the Department.”

“Our WMS data hosting services go from strength to strength. We now have a wide range of commercial and public sector (PSMA) users who benefit from a fast and responsive data feed without the hassle of data management,” said Dave Horner, Managing Director of Getmapping. “As well as the full suite of Ordnance Survey professional and Open Data we are continuing to add both new and archived aerial photography, height data and CIR imagery of the UK to make WMS a very valuable and cost effective option for many organisations,” continued Horner.
