Earth Observation: Floods in Yakutia

Operational satellite-based monitoring of floods on Russian rivers – “Floods-2011” project – is conducted by ScanEx RDC. Data of optical and radar imagery in direct reception mode are received by UniScan ground stations in Moscow, Magadan, Megion and Irkutsk. ScanEx specialists process the images and upload satellite and analysis data to the “Kosmosnimki-Floods” thematic geoportal.  Currently the most complicated situation with floods is on the rivers of the European North and in Siberia. According to the data about the hydro-economic situation on the rivers within the area of operations of Lena Basin Water Department, an ice drift of different flow rate was registered on the section between Macha and Kangalassy on May 15, 08:00AM local time. Jamming of ice was detected in several places on the section Kangalassy-Namtsy. Read More
