In the SmartSenior research project, 28 partner companies and organizations from research and industry will be cooperating under the leadership of Deutsche Telekom Laboratories (T-Labs). The project began in 2009: In nine sub-projects, innovations were developed for integrating communication and services, including assistance in case of emergencies, household safety solutions, systems for social networking, and a telemedicine service center, among others.
The technical challenge was primarily in the standardization and integration of various systems, from television to smart phones and household appliances to cars. The objective of such technologies is to increase the quality of life for seniors and help them keep their independence. Other objectives include lowering the costs of hospital stays, thus reducing the burden on health insurance companies.
In spring 2012 a three-month-long field test will begin. It is to show whether the technology fits together and whether it is accepted by the users: 35 existing apartments in Potsdam, Germany, will be equipped with a fast Internet connection, the Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) Home Gateway as a data hub, and with room sensors. In the Potsdam model apartment, a flat screen showing the SmartSenior interface is in front of the seating area. The set-top box for the audio-video communication via the television, including a camera and speakerphone, is also there.
Sensors on the window frames detect whether the windows are open. The palm-sized room sensor under the ceiling also collects information about temperature, light, and any gas leakage. Most sensors operate autonomously and transmit their data to the gateway.
Seniors are considered to be the main users, along with their families, doctors, paramedics, and physical therapists as co-users and secondary users. These potential users are to be networked via the SmartSenior service portal and be able to be reached via stationary or mobile devices – both in case of emergency and for regular visits or interactive training, such as during rehabilitation after a fall or stroke. www.siemens,com
