Space company Success Rockets presented the demonstrator model of the first Russian specialized satellite for monitoring the main climate-active substances “DIANA” at the 26th UN Climate Conference in Glasgow

Russian private space company Success Rockets is developing a satellite for monitoring key climate-active substances. The model of this satellite was presented for the first time at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow.

This satellite is being created to test technologies for a climate monitoring system, which LLC SR CMS (a subsidiary of Success Rockets) has been developing since early 2021. The system will serve to  track concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The system is also aimed at detecting specific emission sources and obtaining reliable information on carbon and methane sequestration in ecosystems.

The SR CMS project involves the creation of a system that will consist of a satellite segment, ground infrastructure and a hardware and software complex coupled with ground-based means of automatic and instrumental control.  The space part will represent a canstellation of small spacecraft, which will allow obtaining the necessary initial data to obtain reliable information about concentrations. There will be two types of spectrometers on the board of the satellites. A model of this satellite was presented at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow.

For the first time, Oleg Mansurov, the founder and CEO of Success Rockets, announced the plan to develop a satellite for monitoring carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in March 2021. Then in June this year at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum Oleg Mansurov announced the intention to create a full-fledged climate monitoring system, which, in the context of the current climate agenda, will be able to satisfy the demand for reliable information on greenhouse gases not only from Russian consumers, but also from foreign customers.

“Success Rockets’ participation in COP26 in Glasgow confirms that the company sees a good commercial prospect in the implementation of products and services to be created by SR CMS,” said Oleg Mansurov. – Our investors understand that this is a kind of emerging market, in the context of the verification of ESG reporting and the emerging market of carbon units in Russia.

The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology takes part in the development of SR CMS target instrumentation and, according to Alexander Rodin, Executive Director of the Environmental Monitoring and Ecology STC of this university, – “cooperation with Success Rockets allows to test new advanced technologies for greenhouse gas monitoring, including moving forward in solving the problem of obtaining separate data on space-based monitoring of greenhouse gases of anthropogenic origin and fluxes from natural ecosystems.”

“In terms of satellite monitoring of greenhouse gas fluxes, we should certainly focus on the development of a domestic space constellation, which “In terms of satellite monitoring of greenhouse gas flows, one should, of course, focus on the development of the domestic space constellation, which is superior in its characteristics to the existing world level. At the same time it seems very relevant that the countries, leading the developments in this area, should agree on harmonization of technologies and calculation methods in order to avoid disagreements regarding the results of measurements in future” – commented Anna Romanovskaya, Director of the Y.A. Izrael Institute of Global Climate and Ecology.

The development of SR CMS is being carried out taking into account the task set by President Vladimir V. Putin to create a high-precision greenhouse gas monitoring system. “The project is based on an integrated approach, the essence of which is that the system as a whole should consist of a satellite segment, the corresponding ground infrastructure, as well as be interfaced with instrumental and automatic control means” – told General Director of “Climate Monitoring System” LLC (SR CMS), member of the RF CCI Committee on Environmental Management and Ecology Valentin Uvarov.

Success Rockets (SR) is a private Russian corporation that creates conditions for sustainable development of space. The company  is guided in its activities by environmental safety, social responsibility and economic feasibility.

The corporation is working on the creation of ultra-light suborbital and orbital launch vehicles (SR Rockets), small spacecrafts and satellite constellations based on them for remote sensing of the Earth and communications, space tugs (SR Satellites). Another area of the company’s work is the reception, storage, processing and analysis of space data, including remote sensing images (SR Data). Now the company is working on creating artificial intelligence for processing space data of various types.

The corporation was founded on July 30, 2020, in September of the same year, the first investments were received. In December 2020, fire tests of the engine were carried out in Kirov, and in April 2021, on the eve of Cosmonautics Day, a prototype of a suborbital rocket was launched and the first flight tests of onboard systems were carried out. The subdivisions of the corporation operate in Moscow, Krasnodar, Astrakhan, Kirov and Rostov Regions. Success Rockets (SR) has its own production sites and a testing range. Today the rocket engine developed by Success Rockets is the most powerful among all the private companies in Russia.
