GOVT INDIA – Addressing the Consultative Committee Meeting of the Ministry of Water Resources on the subject “The Role and Functions of Central Soil and Material Research Station (CSMRS)” on Wednesday, Prof. Saifuddin Soz, the Union Minister for Water Resources, said that CSMRS plays a vital role in research in the area of Geo-technical Engineering, Construction Materials and Material Quality, the field investigations backed by analysis of sample in laboratories provide valuable input for planning and design etc.
He said that the choice of water resources development project is governed by many factors including geographical and geological conditions. Earlier, developments were done at the best possible sites and in future, we have to develop projects at more challenging sites for which we need detailed investigations and adoption of latest techniques and technologies. Prof. Soz further said that we are fully aware about the importance of research, which provides valuable input in planning any development activity and helps to make it more technically sound, economical and safe.
This is all the more so in the case of water resources sector where we face numerous challenges. We have made considerable development in water resources sector and many projects have been developed. However, a lot more remains to be done. Addressing on the occasion Minister of State for Water Resources Shri Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav said that CSMRS is doing commendable in the field of Soil and Material Research and it should expand its activities to all parts of the country.
A power point presentation on “The Role and Functions of Central Soil and Material Research Station (CSMRS)” was made on the occasion. CSMRS was originally established in 1954 as Silt and Construction Materials Directorate of the erstwhile Central Water and Power Commission (CWPC). Based on the recommendations of a High Level Committee headed by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, CSMRS was delinked in the field of exploration, laboratory and field investigation, basic and applied research in the field of geo-mechanics and construction materials, safety evaluation of existing dams. The Members of Parliament who participated included S/Sh. Abu Ayes Mandal, Dr. Gyan Prakash Pilania, Vasant Rao J. More, Prasanta Prathan and Smt. N.P. Durga. Secretary Water Resources Smt. Gauri Chatterjee and senior officials of the Ministry of Water Resources and its subordinate offices attended the Meeting.
