Under the motto ‘Walking in a Latin America in Transformation? will be celebrated the 12th Geographers’ Meeting of Latin America (EGAL 2009) from April 2 to April 7 in Montevideo, Uruguay.  The gvSIG Project will have an out-standing participation in the meeting.

Among the objectives of the event are the following:

To give support to research, teaching and Latin American extension through agreements among the different centers of education and institutions grouping the geographers;

To stimulate an open relationship, avoiding the development of exclusive power groups.

Set for Saturday the 4th of April and under the EGAL 2009?s auspices, gvSIG will participate in the meeting with the presentation ?gvSIG: GIS in open source software?.

Simultaneously, from March 30 to April 2 there will be a gvSIG course given at the Faculty of Science of the Universidad de la República Oriental del Uruguay, for the project ‘Development of tools for environmental and territorial monitoring’.  This is part of the program ‘Unidos in Acción’ (United in Action) carried out jointly by the Uruguayan government and the United Nations.

This project is considered of special relevancy in Uruguay, since several institutions are agreeing on methodologies and tools of work for the management of the geographical information in the frame of the Infrastructure of Spatial Information of Uruguay. The objective of the course is to learn gvSIG and its applications in depth, considering its generalized use in state organisms and in the private sector.
