Farmers, Foresters Divided on Agriculture, Conservation Merger

Foresters, university officials, landowners and recreationists who spoke Friday at the first in a series of stakeholder meetings about the proposed merger of two state departments said, for the most part, they were willing to accept a new government structure but were worried some groups might be overlooked in the shuffle. Maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources Commissioner Walt Whitcomb and Department of Conservation Commissioner Bill Beardsley presented fluid plans for the union, which would create a Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. UN and Partners Launch Initiative for Resource-Efficient Cities

The United Nations and its partners today unveiled a new initiative to achieve sustainable urban development by promoting the efficient use of energy, water and other resources, lowering pollution levels and reducing infrastructure costs in cities. The Global Initiative for Resource-Efficient Cities was launched by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and partners in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, just days ahead of the start of the high-level meeting of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

Universal Support in Rio for Phase-Down of HFCs for Climate Protection

Today UN officials and country negotiators agreed on the final text of the Rio+20 declaration, entitled The Future We Want, which includes a call for the global phase-down of the factory-made super-greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
