Planning for Natural Hazards Under EU and International Programmes

We present case studies regarding the application and analysis of open data for heritage management. In particular case studies of selected medieval hill towns in the Abruzzo Region analysed several solutions during and after the 2009 Aquila earthquake. Case studies of Haiti hinterland (immediately following the devastating earthquake in January 2010) will test hydrographic technologies combined with open data analysis. The analysis of open data with PSI techniques poses often problems on sites where, due to the presence of human artefacts and vegetation cover.

Inclusion of Forestry Matters in Policy and Decision Making Process

Shri Ranjan Chatterjee, Consultant, Planning Commission, said that forests are meant for every body and we need to keep balance between environment and forests. Shri Chatterjee said, “Forests are under pressure because of lack of understanding. Forests are not merely to preserve but work towards more greening with joint efforts.” Addressing a valedictory session of first Indian Forest Congress here today, Sh Chatterjee said, “At Planning Commission, we are ready to allocate money for each task, but it must have monetary evaluation. He added that this is not for any constraint, but this will help to achieve targets, to know whether the things have been completed appropriately and carry out any rectifications, if required. He appealed participants to understand the problems of forests, GIS Maps, tribals and their rights and other problems at grass root level and address them.” Read More

GISCI Position on the GIS Profession in Relation to Other Geospatial Professions

The Board of Directors of the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) has issued the GISCI position on the GIS profession in relation to other geospatial professions.  The position states in part: The GIS Certification Institute contends that state regulation of the many and varied tasks performed by GIS Professionals would be counterproductive. Instead of state regulation, we believe that voluntary certification of GIS professionals with encouragement and support from employers is the best means to promote high education standards, continuing professional development, and ethical practice in our rapidly growing and evolving field. GISCI contends that the practice of surveying should be defined narrowly, and that associated state regulations should be narrow in scope, reflecting the limited footprint of survey practice within the geospatial field. The full position statement can be found on the GISCI website at http://www.gisci.org/PDFs/GISCI_position_GIS_profession_final.pdf.
