Fast Action Climate Measure Can Prevent 0.5°C of Global Warming

A new study in Science to be published 13 January identifies 14 fast action measures to reduce air pollutants that can deliver major benefits for climate, public health, and agriculture.  The measures reduce emissions of black carbon and ground-level ozone, preventing 0.5°C of warming by 2050, half of the warming otherwise expected.   The reductions in ozone are achieved by cutting its precursor methane. The 14 measures also save up to 4.7 million lives per year, while increasing crop yields up to 135 billion metric tons.

The Council Adopted Conclusions on the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020

The Council adopted conclusions on the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 focusing on the concrete measures required to achieve its main targets: protect species and habitats, maintain and restore ecosystems among others. In addition, Environment Ministers also adopted conclusions on the Roadmap to a Resource-Efficient Europe proposal.

No Warrant Needed for GPS Monitoring, Judge Rules

A Missouri federal judge ruled the FBI did not need a warrant to secretly attach a GPS monitoring device to a suspect’s car to track his public movements for two months. The ruling, upholding federal theft and other charges, is one in a string of decisions nationwide supporting warrantless GPS surveillance. Last week’s decision comes as the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the issue within months in an unrelated case. Read More

Scottish Building Standards

Council staff will continue to be the only government appointed verifier for new homes and buildings in Scotland. Verifiers protect the public by independently checking building work - from design through construction to completion - to make sure new homes, offices and public buildings meet all relevant building regulations. Ministers have decided, following a recent consultation, that they will not introduce private verifiers and retain the services of council building standards departments, which employ around 700 staff across Scotland.
