Drought and fire have destroyed crops and vegetation in eastern New Mexico, leaving the dry and barren soil vulnerable to wind erosion and leading the governor to declare a state of emergency earlier this month. Curry County Road Supervisor Steve Reed said the blowing sand and resulting drifts the last two years are the worst he's seen in his 17 years with the department.
