ERA and Wildlife Works Deliver First REDD+ Project in the Congo Basin Rainforest

ERA Carbon Offsets Ltd. and Wildlife Works Carbon LLC are pleased to announce the validation and verification of the first REDD+ project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The project has earned 2.5 million tonnes of Verified Emission Reductions to date and will generate an average of 5.6 million tonnes annually.

Deforestation in Tropical Regions Contributed 3.0 Gigatons of CO2 per Year to the Atmosphere from 2000-2005

The Ecosystem Services Unit of Winrock International (WI) and Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) today announced they have reached scientific consensus on gross carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from tropical deforestation.  The analysis provides a crucial piece of information that now allows policymakers to confidently set targets for emissions reductions based on scientifically derived benchmarks.

Consideration of environmental risks and natural resource constraints is becoming increasingly important in assessing a nation's credit risk, according to a new report by the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and Global Footprint Network, in collaboration with leading financial institutions. The project calculated natural resource risk profiles for five pilot countries. Ecological services derived from healthy streams, wetlands, and riparian zones include food, freshwater, flood control, water treatment, and recreational opportunities to mention only a few. They are vital for human well-being and maintaining healthy wildlife populations. Their benefits are felt locally in the form of providing drinking water and food, while on a global scale sequestering carbon and helping to regulate climate. The economic impacts are great.
