The German Federal Agency For Nature Conservation Endorses Payments For Ecosystem Services

Nature has its price, but seldom do we pay for its use. Because ecosystem services such as clean water, pollination, climate regulation or coastal protection often do not cause any costs for businesses, the depletion of these services is not considered. And yet, society and businesses are equally affected by the consequences of losing ecosystem services. In order to raise businesses’ awareness for the value of “natural capital”, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) organises a thematic session as part of the SusCon to discuss a financing mechanism called Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) that offers an opportunity to safeguard nature’s services.

The David Suzuki Foundation and Google Earth Outreach are launching an online map that will allow residents and decision-makers to zoom in to their community and calculate the economic value of natural capital assets. The sophisticated services that nature provides are not only misunderstood and underappreciated; they tend to be ignored in modern economics and urban planning. When a forest or wetland is converted to another use, municipal decision-makers focus on infrastructure costs, property values, and future contributions to the tax roll.
Place Forests Under Local Control to Increase Incomes and Sustainability

To increase the incomes of many of the billion forest-dependent people worldwide the current model for investment in forests must be turned on its head. An initiative of unprecedented scale, led by The Forests Dialogue (TFD), IUCN and the Growing Forests Partnerships (GFP), has found that optimizing the benefits and productivity of forests requires moving from a ‘resource-led’ model to a ‘rights-based’ system of ‘locally controlled forestry’, that places local control of forests at the heart of the investment process.
