Fugro completed data acquisition and processing of the entire United States West Coast under a contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in support of their National Coastal Mapping Program. The project team’s efforts earned Fugro the USACE “LCDR Peter Johnson Best Practices Award” at the recent Joint Airborne Technical Center of Expertise (JALBTCX) Annual Airborne Coastal Mapping and Charting Workshop.
This major, multi-year effort covered a 1500m wide ribbon, extending 500m inshore to 1000m offshore, along the coastlines of California, Oregon and Washington. Over three survey seasons, approximately 2,000km of coastline were surveyed. This marks the first time that the entire west coast has been mapped in a single, dedicated effort for this program. The project involved multiple aircraft, multiple operating companies and multiple sensors. Aerial RGB imagery, hyperspectral imagery, topographic LIDAR and bathymetric LIDAR (where water clarity allowed) were acquired over land and water by a team that was led by Fugro Pelagos, and supported by Fugro Horizons and Fugro EarthData.
Data acquisition was tide coordinated, such that Fugro had sufficient overlap in both the land and sea domains, which allowed the creation of a seamless dataset in a common frame of reference. These datasets and data products provide a unique and unprecedented baseline for Stakeholders who are interested in continuing coastal monitoring, sea level rise assessment, pre- and post- storm coastal effects, habitat assessment and coastal development.
