The European Commissioner for the Environment, Janez Potočnik, views the European Green Capital Award as an excellent way to promote sustainable urban development. When European Commissioner for the Environment, Janez Potočnik, succeeded Stavros Dimas at the beginning of 2010, he also inherited the supreme responsibility for the European Green Capital Award. Says Potočnik: "Sustainable urban development is a vision: but we must all be involved if it is to become a reality. I am very pleased to have inherited the European Green Capital Award as Commissioner for the Environment, and I am confident that it will prove to be an excellent way to help convince cities that their successful futures are inextricably linked to sustainable urban development," explains the Commissioner.
