Real Food Wales is a new iPhone app, which helps users discover local, sustainable and delicious food along the Welsh Coast Path in Pembrokeshire. The new app is the brainchild of two sisters from South Wales, Helen and Nicola Steer, who were one of five successful ventures in last year’s Ordnance Survey GeoVation Challenge. The challenge, which took place ahead of the official opening of the Welsh Coast Path, challenged entrepreneurs across Great Britain to use innovation and geography to come up with ideas for ventures, products and applications, which would help connect communities and visitors along the path, benefiting those who live and work along the route, and beyond.
The Kingdom of Bahrain has taken a step closer to developing a new 3D enabled spatial data model of the nation following a new partnership between Ordnance Survey International and the Survey and Land Registration Bureau (SLRB). The SLRB is the government organisation responsible for land, aerial and hydrographic survey services and the registration of real estate properties in the Kingdom of Bahrain. As part of the recently signed agreement, the SLRB will call upon the expertise of Ordnance Survey International to design and build a new 3D-enabled national spatial data model.
The University of Leeds, UK, has purchased a state of the art laser scanning system from 3D Laser Mapping. The RIEGL VZ-1000, which can capture highly accurate measurements from almost a mile away (1400 metres), will primarily be used within the earth sciences departments. Applications will include the measurement of earth surface change in inhospitable environments such as polar, artic and alpine regions. It is hoped the RIEGL VZ-1000 will facilitate more efficient and effective field studies in addition to benefits afforded through its use in laboratory experiments.
US Topo maps now have a crisper, cleaner design - enhancing readability of maps for online and printed use. Map symbols are easier to read over the digital aerial photograph layer whether the imagery is turned on or off. Improvements to symbol definitions (color, line thickness, line symbols, area fills), layer order, and annotation fonts are additional features of this supplemental release. Users can now adjust the transparency for some features and layers to increase visibility of multiple competing layers.
