As Shell inches closer to launching exploratory drilling in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas, the federal government today announced it has expanded an online mapping tool for responding to offshore oil spills so it includes Arctic waters. The system, known as the Environmental Response Management Application — or ERMA, if you’re on a first-name basis — previously has focused on the Gulf of Mexico and seven other regions and was used to help track ocean conditions, oil infrastructure, environmental monitoring and more during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill two years ago.
