Despite the tragic outcome last weekend of a search for two missing climbers on a remote mountain peak in Peru, the emerging technology used in the effort allowed people around the world to help.
After Gil Weiss, of Boulder, and Ben Horne, of San Diego, were reported missing, Tomnod -- a company that uses satellite images and crowdsourcing for geographical analytics -- posted images of the area where they were last seen.
Friends, family members, fellow climbers and strangers were able to track everything from signs of a base camp to footprints in the snow using the images captured from space.
