The Geospatial Information Technology Association's 2011 Geospatial Infrastructure Solutions (GIS) Conference took place in Dallas, Texas from April 10-13, with an event theme, "Intelligent Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future." At this 34th annual event, the rapid pace of technology and the evolution of conference outreach were major points of discussion.
Airports around the world are faced with several significant challenges. As their sizes grow, the need for improved strategies and tools to manage spaces directly impacts the ability to generate revenue. The infrastructure required to support many buildings, runways and accessibility is also under pressure to increase efficiency. Meanwhile, energy, emergency and critical response functions must operate throughout these facilities. Geographic information systems (GIS) can be used to increase efficiency, lower operating costs and to ensure critical operations are managed properly and effectively. The 1st International GIS for Airport Management was recently held at Paris Orly airport to discuss these issues.
2013 will witness the appearance of a new 400 kg mini-satellite on orbit with small-size high resolution radar onboard, which will open new possibilities for operational detailed imagery of emergency situations. Radar small satellite has been developed at the British company SSTL since 2009, as Luis Gomes, SSTL RS Department Head, reported at the last 13th MDDC Meeting in February.
Flying the flag of Geokomm academy - a training institution of the German geo-information industry association Geokomm, 24 highly motivated participants attended the training course “Basic Knowledge on Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI)” held from the 28th of February to the 4th of March in Potsdam.
imagina 2011 was held in Monaco February 1-3, 2011. The annual event is oriented toward 3D simulation and visualization. This year it included 1680 delegates from 44 countries around the world together with a large contingent of journalists writing on topics ranging from entertainment to 3D graphics to visualization of the urban landscape.
The Geospatial World Forum took place this past week in Hyderabad, India, drawing an international crowd of geospatial technology leaders. This is the third bi-annual event in a series, although the word mapping has been replaced with the word geospatial for this year’s installment. The conference drew a high-level international audience, with CEO-level participation from many geospatial organizations, representation from world mapping agencies, and high-level participation from the Indian government.
The second GeoDesign Summit took place in Redlands, Calif. from Jan. 6-7, 2011. This year's gathering opened the event up to all those that were interested, and drew a strong crowd of roughly 600 attendees from a cross-section of disciplines. While the event still favored well-connected representatives from academia, architecture, engineering, landscape architecture and planning, this year also saw a good representation of contractors and project managers that added the implementation perspective. The event continued to discuss the definition of the geospatial approach that is being called GeoDesign, with often divergent ideas of what it is, and where it might be headed.
The European Lidar Mapping Forum (ELMF) was held at The Hague, Netherlands Nov. 30 - Dec. 1, 2010. Although the city endured the largest snowfall and plunging temperatures in 40 years, the environment inside was much more comfortable where over 600 attendees from 42 countries were in attendance displaying and discussing state-of-the-art lidar mapping devices and associated technologies. The ELMF also featured two presentation tracks together with a workshop series oriented toward educating users on the use and applications of lidar.
