The 2nd International GIS for Rail Summit was recently held in Paris, France. This Esri organised event was sponsored by the International Union of Railways (UIC), a confederation of 197 worldwide members from 5 different continents. The event provided an opportunity for the participants to share interests, discuss issues and to learn about member initiatives involving geographic information system (GIS) use for rail. Additional attendees provided details about other geomatics technologies in use for improving railway operations.
The 2011 Hexagon Conference took place last week in Orlando, Fla. This first-ever combination of Hexagon's metrology business with Leica Geosystems, Intergraph and ERDAS users drew more than 2,500 participants from 65 countries. The event provided launching pad for a new geospatial platform initiative at Intergraph, displayed new levels of integration between the raster capabilities of ERDAS Imagine and the vector capabilities of Intergraph's GeoMedia.
The first Esri Forestry GIS Solutions Conference took place from May 24-26 at the Esri headquarters in Redlands, Calif. The community of the Esri forestry users is more than 1,000 strong, with more than 250 attendees from 13 different countries represented at the event. The event program highlighted the increasing focus on sustainable development practices, the accounting for ecosystem services, the use of lidar, advances in fieldwork with tools to bring GIS into the field, and the emergence of full online GIS.
WhereCamp EU 2001 was held in Berlin, Germany May 27-28 and was attended by an internaitonal audience that including a wide range of individuals involved in business, education and government geo-application development. Following previous WhereCamp approaches, the diverse and wide ranging topics for presentation were arranged and decided upon by attendees during each morning. The presentations and subsequent interesting question and discussion periods helped to provide interaction for testing new ideas, products and thoughts and served to instill new ideas for all who attended.
The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) 2011 Annual Conference was held May 1-5 at the Frontier Airlines Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with many and varied conference activities and an attendance of over 1,100. There were 11 workshops held on the two days preceding the conference covering a wide array of topics including, Professional Airborne Digital Mapping Systems – An Overview; Looking Above the Terrain: Lidar for Vegetation Assessment; State-of-the-Art Automated Linear Feature Extraction for a Production Environment; Object-Based Image Analysis; Lidar Waveform: The Potential and Benefits for Topographic Mapping and Making SAR Accessible.
The first-ever National Map User Conference took place last week in Denver, Colorado with a full-capacity crowd addressing the theme, "Engage. Connect. Discover." The target was 350 attendees, but more than 400 came, with 15 federal agencies, many states, academic institutions, vendors and local governments represented. The program included 66 concurrent sessions, three listening session, a product review session, a special event and award ceremony, and was preceded by workshops. The event was also an opportunity for national meetings for remote sensing and hydrography communities.
In its eighth year, the annual SPAR International conference continued to grow and evolve, attracting record attendance of nearly 800 for the first time and more than 60 companies and associations to the exhibition hall. Held March 21 through 24, the event showed how much it has grown beyond its plant and process roots, with five tracks of seminars, presentations and roundtables that included the newest ideas and technologies in 3D imaging.
CAPIGI 2011 took place in Amsterdam from 4th to 6th of April. The Community on Agricultural Policy Implementation and Geo-Information gathered for the 4th time, connecting people from governments, industry and research organisations, discussing the impact of geo-information in implementing agricultural policy. Sticking to its’ format that was invented in 2005, CAPIGI again was able to present state-of-the-art overviews on innovation and research in geo sciences and geomatics, being illustrated with practice experiences in agricultural policy implementation and the latest developments in the EU agricultural policy domain.
Several interesting presentations and discussions emerged from the conference and a summary list of observations and conclusions are presented. The event had 94 contributions from 34 organizations attending from 13 different European countries. A CD was produced containing 13 abstracts and presentation as well as 2 sessions with presentations, 2 technical/marketing presentations (Astrium and GIZ), 2 keynote speeches (Prof. Chryssy Potsiou, Greece and Prof. Murat Meha, Kosova), and 9 presentations.
