The Geospatial World Forum Achieves Global Geospatial Objectives

The fifth Geospatial World Forum took place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands from May 13 through 16, 2013. This is the event’s second time in The Netherlands, with last year’s event taking place in Amsterdam, and the previous three in Hyderabad, India. With a growing international audience that reached 1,000 attendees this year, and an increasingly top-level draw from government, industry and academia, the unique event has achieved good momentum. This is not to detract from prior efforts, just an observation that there is a sense of community, a sharing of vision for what geospatial technologies can contribute to a rapidly transforming world, and frank discussions and collaboration on the common pain points of technology limitations, economic challenges, and policy directives.
DigitalGlobe Focused on Creating a Time Machine for the World #GWF2013

Stephen Wood, vice president, DigitalGlobe spoke this morning at the Geospatial World Forum in Rotterdam about earth imagery being all about change, and the role of imagery to provide a time machine for the world. The daily change in activity is being monitored by DigitalGlobe, using tradecraft and people across the world.

The GeoDesign Concept Goes Global

The GeoDesign Summit took place last week in Redlands, Calif. at Esri headquarters auditorium. This fourth event continues the future-oriented conversation that relates geography to design. This is a new way of thinking as well as an emerging toolset that is focused on sustainability and making the world a better place. This intimate event that takes over the 250-person auditorium is now poised to expand with planned events in both Amsterdam and Beijing later this year.
Trimble Addresses Radical Change at 6th International User Conference

Steve Berglund, president and CEO of Trimble, addressed the audience at Trimble Dimensions this week in Las Vegas. This is the sixth user conference, with more than 3,000 people from more than 80 countries. Berglund indicated that over the years, the message for the keynote has focused on the fact that technology is cool, technology is dynamic, and technology will improve how you do your work. The same message is true today, with more emphasis on moving from discrete task productivity to enterprise and workflow productivity.
URISA Marks 50th Anniversary with Strong Showing in Portland

The 50th annual meeting of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) took place in Portland, Ore. from Oct. 1-4. The event drew a strong showing of more than 600 attendees, including representative from the co-located Northwest GIS Users Group. The conference placed emphasis on the growing needs for better urban systems given the explosion of population in urban areas worldwide that is projected to accelerate to a 70% urban population by 2050. The event included a workshop day, lively and entertaining Ignite talks, a tradeshow and exhibit reception, an evening outing, and three keynote addresses.
Esri Takes GIS Online to Open Our World

The 2012 Esri International User Conference took place in San Diego, Calif., from July 23-27. The audience of more than 14,000 attendees came from 126 countries, with a full third from outside the United States, and a full third there for their first time. This year's theme, "Opening Our World," was meant to address the rapid changes that are facing our world, and the power of geographic thinking to understand and deal with the challenges. The rapid evolution of GIS is rising to the challenge, becoming more multidimensional, easier to use, with better data management and usability, and more mobile and real-time.
Hexagon Sets a Path for Deep Spatial Technology Integration

The Hexagon 2012 conference took place last week in Las Vegas with 3,031 people from various industries, including utilities, communications, public service, automotive, plant, marine, government, security, and more. Attendees came from 76 countries, included 60 sponsors, with 400+ sessions that amounted to 29,000 hours of education. This second annual event provided an updated on geospatial technology integration, with announcements from Leica Geosystems and Intergraph, that demonstrate a deeper integration between diverse technology offerings.
