I fully agree with the arguments of the value of digital mapping but one issue which has not been effectively resolved is how we archive and preserve these new forms of maps. This is more than just a back up and storage issue. Many such maps simply disappear for a variety of reasons.Maps are part of our cultural heritage. It is easier for me to get maps from centuries ago than the digital maps produced in the 20th century.Who decides what is to be archived and how are the new electronic and multimedia maps to be stored. Some promising work is being done by OGC and others but we are far from an acceptable solution.
