Sustainable tourism is an important aspect of many European countries and regions. It plays a crucial role in parks, protected areas and coastal zones. To be able to guarantee tourism activities and development in regions, public servants have to be trained about potential influence of investment in tourism on the environment. Nature protection and support of tourism activities at the same time are the key issues.
Scientists of the TU Darmstadt are working on the Smart City. Smart phones, equipped with numerous sensors, significantly simplify for their owners the organization of several aspects of their lives. But this is only the beginning; scientists of Darmstadt envision an entire smart city in which all sensor-equipped devices are interlinked in an intelligent manner.
In recent years, EPCOR Water Services of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has run highly visible city-wide water conservation campaigns. EPCOR Water serves 1 million customers with 240,000 fully metered service connections, 2 water treatment plants, and 3,500 km of pipeline. Along with raising water conservation awareness, the campaigns were specifically designed to reduce summer demand. Limited treatment capacity made it necessary to reduce consumption levels during the high demand summer lawn watering season. The water conservation campaigns with a heavy focus on summer lawn watering reductions were successful, delaying the need for the facility expansion from ~1990 to 2006.
On September 9, 2010, a gas transmission pipeline rupture in San Bruno, California, killed eight people and caused extensive property damage. The subsequent National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation revealed that some records in the operator’s Geographic Information System (GIS) were inaccurate. The finding is significant because federal law requires pipeline operators to perform data-driven risk analysis as a part of federally mandated pipeline integrity management. The errant data may have invalidated the operator’s risk analysis, and potentially affected events leading to the rupture. As a result, on January 3, 2011, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a series of urgent pipeline safety recommendations calling on operators to perform extensive verification and validation of their pipeline records.
Water is an invaluable resource; already in 1992 it took centre stage at the first international conference of the United Nations on environmental protection and sustainability. The United Nations have declared the years 2005 to 2015 to be the international “Water for Life” Decade.
