The protection of nature environments aims to support sustainability. Thematic cartography plays an important role toward achieving this goal. Several surveying technologies are included for the production of this information and the geo-referencing of cultural sites.
Whether it is connecting cross-border data, collaborating with global geospatial communities or building bridges between geographic, social or other statistical information, EuroGeographics is firmly founded on the principle of trans-boundary cooperation. As the membership association representing Europe’s national mapping, land registry and cadastral agencies, it is at the forefront of many initiatives designed to improve and deliver cross-continental projects and services. EuroGeographics currently brings together 53 organisations (more are expected to join in the coming months) from 43 countries who between them speak some 40 different languages. Its workforce is also spread throughout the region.
SDIs are being developed to help address environmental concerns, disaster preparedness and emergency responsiveness there are other possibilities for benefiting from SDIs, namely regional competitiveness. This could mean public sector organisations who are currently experiencing budget cuts across the board could use activities relating to geospatial data to minimise budget cuts or maintain existing budget levels. This is because their activities provide a positive contribution to the regional economy, especially where the overriding objective is to build a knowledge economy.
When a domain is relatively new, the terminology is often imprecise, and many different words many be coined and used by different organizations and individuals with none of them realizing that they are talking about essentially the same thing. This is substantially true for the use of Digital City and SDI as applied to urban environments.
Good planning is critical to achieving sustainability. The success of international, national, regional, and organizational plans for climate resiliency, energy management, supply chain optimization, facility management, and transportation efficiency depend on a defined purpose, need, and process to achieve sustainable performance.
